Interesting, what are the titles for the older bios? A good university
library may have them.

This one is fairly easy to find, it may even still be in print. The
publisher is Tuttle I think.

Interesting, I remember reading somewhere that in Japan they have a
small shrine to him maintained by his family.

Re: [samuraihistory] Re: Hi

by William letham

Here are the books as requested

P G Rogers The First Englishman in Japan 1956 Harvill Press

Richard Tames Servant of the Shogun 1981 Paul Norbury Publication

William Corr Adamas the pilot 1995 Japan Library

I read the Needlewatcher book but it didn't impress me.

In addition there is another work that chronicles Adams voyage to Japan that
gives some info from the Dutch perspective;

Dirk Jan Barrevald The Dutch Discovery of Japan 2001 Writers Club Press.

I'm not sure about the shrine but I have been to Ito on the Izu peninsula
where Adams made his ships. The only thing to see though is a statue on the
seashore.

I wasn't either, but thanks to you I have some other books to look at.
The local libraries have copies of the two older books you cited. Hooray!

I don't know if this is true, but I read once that if you try to touch the
edge of the blade, that your finger will hit the floor before you realize that
you've touched the blade.

i don't know about the finger thing, but i have a full tang, carbon steel
kodachi myself. i touch the blade almost every day. but it is made by a
manufactured in the Philippines (due to some law on exporting Japanese swords) so i do
not know if it is worthy of being called a true samurai sword.

Actually the blades use to have a symbol for how many
bodies it could slice through which determined how
sharp it was.

Yes, after being forged, the blades would then be tested on the corpses of criminals. After that, it would be returned to the maker to be stamped how well it held up, but it was mroe for a durability test than a sharpness test, as any sharp blade could cut, but not every blade would stay intact. Some may crack or even break entirely if the craftsmanship was flawed.

Uhm Wilson are you sure about that ? I thought that the swords were sent
to selected individuals after hey had been forged and polished who then
tested them and inlaid a gold inscription on the tang saying how many
bodies were cut with the sword. As far as I know the smith had nothing
to do with that entire process ?

by goodfella26426

that is very interesting.. I have never seen that b4, thank you for that little bit of info.. according to the articles and such that I have read, that is how it was done.. Ive often wondered about it bcos in order to stamp the blade like that, youd hafta heat it up again, which could possibly mess up the temper.. perhaps the smith is the one who places the gold into the tang?? unfortunately I dont know now where I read that, but I have read it in more than one place, if I come across it again I'll let you know..

Yes, after being forged, the blades would then be tested on the corpses
of criminals. After that, it would be returned to the maker to be
stamped how well it held up, but it was mroe for a durability test than
a sharpness test, as any sharp blade could cut, but not every blade
would stay intact. Some may crack or even break entirely if the
craftsmanship was flawed.

Actually the blades use to have a symbol for how many
bodies it could slice through which determined how
sharp it was.

Anyone interested in Japanese swords should start here;

http://www.geocities.com/alchemyst/nihonto.htm

Cutting tests were usually cut and inlaid with gold by other artisans.
When done by the smith it is very clearly by the same hand as the
signature and not done in gold. Sharpness was determined by the number
of bodies cut, 7 is the record. Toughness, by the location of the cut,
across the hips being most difficult...
If a true nihonto best to keep the fingers off the blade,

The blade doesnt get reheated or stamped, it is done with a chisel while the blade is cold,
the gold is then inlaid.
