question: where Tokugawa Ieyasu's son?

by andjoysmith

Hello, I'm rather new, my name is Andy Joy Smith, I
have a question about the battle of Sekigahara in
1600. Where was Tokugawa Ieyasu's son? I thought he
was besieging a castle somewhere else, may be it's
just my imagination.

He was besieging the castle of the Sanada clan, in
Shinano. He didn't make it to Sekigahara.

Ieyasu had a number of sons living at the time. You are probably
thinking of Hidetada, his heir, who had been delayed in attempting
to take the castle of Ueda, held by Sanada Masayuki. Ieyasu was
furious with Hidetada, and only a determined intervention by the
Hondas, father and son, prevented Ieyasu from disinheriting Hidetada.
There is an interesting description of the incident in Albert Sadler's
biography of Ieyasu, "The Maker of Modern Japan".

Hi Nate (and all)

Wasn't he slow in bringing his men up to the field? I read that
Ieyasu was furious with him for wasting time at what was
effectively a sideshow and arriving after the battle had been
decided?

Thanks, Nate, that helps a lot with that question. I
have other questions, like about why they call the
naginata the pole sword.

Hideyasu...Left in Shimotuke in case of a battle with Uesugi clan.

Hidetada...On the way along Tozan-Do,he besieged Ueda castle(Sanada
clan). The Sanada was so skillfull that he failed to beat them and
reached Sekigahara after the battle had been over.It is said Ieyasu
got mad at him.

Tadayoshi...His army went along Tokai-do,reached Sekigahara on
time,LOL.He opened fire for Sekigahara battle though it had been
planned that Fukushima Masanori would play the role.

Nobuyoshi...Unknown.He is said to have been sick.

I visited Ueda castle last month,I like Sanada....
