History of the Ninja

by S. Lyle Parker

Hi All,

Just got asked by a friend of mine for good books about the history of the
ninja. I have a few friends that practise ninpo and their suggestions have
been pretty much dominated by the Stephen Hayes realm.

Anybody know of a good scholarly book on the subject -- or chapter in a book
-- in either English or French?

Cheers,

Shannon

Hi there.
The closest 'scholarly' book in English is by Stephen Turnbull- "Ninja", a
good book overall and packed with translations from historical books and
scrolls that depict the images of the Shinobi as they were seen throughout
the Samurai years in Japan.
As far as Japanese books go try 'Shoninki', 'Bansenshukai', or 'Ninpiden'
for writings from the source as it were and the various books by Masaaki
Hatsumi are also worth the read.
HTH.
Abayo.
(Also try this site... www.ninpo.org )

"Scholarly" and "Turnbull" in the same sentence? Egads! It is a sad,
sad day...

Try `Ninjutsu-History and Tradition` by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi or any book by
Sensei, he is the Soke of our art.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Norman.

Hi All

Anything by Hayes I would steer clear of he tends to
mix information from outher countries and cultures in
his ninja books and the real info is completely lost
in the
other non Ninja/japanese stuff.

Turnbull also wrote a book that is more of the samurai
point of view and side of the history of the ninja.

Hatsumis books such as Nine traditions, sengoku ninpo
zukan (translation from www.ninjutsu.com) and history
and traditions which Norman suggests are excellent.
However History and traditions touchs only slightly on
the history and mainly deals with the fighting arts
and tools they used
