Akita Clan

I am very confused about the Akita Clan and the Ando Clan. Are they the same clan? Are they a different clan? I have done a lot of research on this but have not gotten it strait yet. Would someone please explain this to me. Thank you.

This will explain it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akita_clan
Basically - during the Sengoku period the Andō clan was driven out of their territory by the Nanbu clan, and migrated to the neighboring province of Dewa. Andō Chikasue changed the clan's name to "Akita". Akita Sanesue was the first Akita daimyō during the Edo period. However, Sanesue lost his land and was sent to Shishido in Hitachi in 1602 by the Tokugawa because he performed very poorly during the Sekigahara Campaign.

Thank you so much. I have one more question regarding the Akita Clan. I possess a book that states that Ashina Yoshikatsu was once a daimyo of the Akita Clan. Is this true? I am also wondering how Miyamoto Musashi became a ronin. Could you please answer these two questions. Thank you.

Not real sure if Yoshikatsu Ashina was a daimyo of the Akita Clan per se. I do know that some daimyo replacementswere made after the Battle of Sekigahara and that Kakunodate was occupied by Ashina Yoshikatsu. What I read didn't say he was made the daimyo but the inference to the word "occupied" indicates that he was "in charge". Also, Kakunodate is within the Akita prefecture.
If I remember correctly he became the lord of the Satake Clan and is credited with making Kakunodate the "Samurai town" we know today.
As to Miyamoto Musashi... I've never really seen anything that definitively said how he became a Ronin. The most I've ever read was that after the Battle of Sekigakarai he was left in the position of being a masterless samurai. That being said his master was either killed during the battle (or as a result of the battle) or he was dismissed for some reason by his master after the battle. Not real sure if Yoshikatsu

Musashi sided with the Toyotomi’s and the army of the West. They lost. Musashi was among other things at both battles of Osaka castle. It is really easy to become unemployed when you are on the loosing side and the winning side is not interested in recruiting your unit. Also, Musashi was a bit of jerk. One of Hideyoshi’s problems in 1590 was that he had more followers than he had turf available to reward them with. This is very likely a major reason for the Korean campaigns.
As for the Akita, technically they were not a clan.

That is a wonderful contribution.
I've been studying Medieval Japanese history, the Sengoku Period to Meiji Restoration (the Battle of Port Arthur1580-1910).
Do you have a favorite movie, have you seen 'Ichiban No Bushi' or 'Mibu Gishi Den'?
....my dream would be to get a PhD in Japanese History....someday with the lottery's cooperation of course :)

Hi.
I am sorry that I just now noticed your message. It went into an obscure corner of my email filing system. Regardless, thank you very much for your kind words. You probably know by now that 1600-1868 is called Kinsei and is considered post medieval for Japan. I do not recall seeing either 'Ichiban No Bushi' or 'Mibu Gishi Den’, but I may have seen then. I have dozens of Japanese DVDs and have seen rather more Japanese movies. You can of course save your pennies and complete a PhD as an older student. More people are doing that these days. I finished my PhD at the age of 42. A friend of mine is 68 and pursuing a masters in Norse studies in Iceland. So, the lottery is not necessary, but it would make for a less frugal student life.
Regardless, best wishes with your studies. There is always new stuff to learn.
