Personally, my favourite samurai is Minamoto-no
Yoshitsune . Yoritomo his brother was clearly more
pragmatic and managed to consolidate the Kamakura
bakufu and appease the rival Buddhist sects, but
Yoshitsune appears to me to be a more rounded samurai;
a warrior of undoubted loyalty and took offence to all
who did doubt it, in the end dying for his belief in
himself .

i say that oda nobungna was the best samurai who ever lived. tho he was cruell, he was a master of deception and an extreme stratigist. and, like all other samurai, he rose to th peak of his military career and also met his downfall.

kusunoki masashige, ashikaga takauji, yagyui munenori, mori motonari, i
think there many great samurai. really difficult to say someone was the
best. even yoritomo was great although it is quite unpopular view.

"Yamato" is Japan, these days used rather more poetically, like Albion for
England.

The "Yamato damashi" is the Japanese spirit.
