Does anyone know if there is a samurai movie about the Satsuma Rebellion in
1877?

I've heard of Tom Cruise's movie. I was wondering if the Japanese themselves
have made any movies about the Satsuma Rebellion? It seems like such a
natural subject for one of their movie makers to do a movie on. In many
ways, the Satsuma Rebellion parallels our Civil War.

DAIBOSATSU TOGE

Is a Taisho period novelization of the Meiji Ishhin and its aftermath, It ran
for several years and was made into many movies. Most notably THE SWORD OF DOOM
which many are unaware was supposed to be the first of a trilogy. The older pre
war version features some Satsuma rebellion scenes but I know of no others.
Would love to see it all realized on the silver screen myself - Tom

SWORD OF DOOM is my very favorite film BTW...

There are two miniseries about the life of Saigo Takamori that includes the
Satsuma rebellion.

Takaharazaka starring Satomi Kotaro originally aired in 1987. Its about 5hrs
long.
Tobu ga Gotoku starring Nishida Toshiyuki was 1990s Taiga drama offering, a
fifty part maxiseries.

Both of these are available on video but I assume only here in Japan and
only in Japanese. the Tobu ga Gotoku was shortened to about 7 hours for the
videotape.

I remember that Tobu ga Gotoku was shown in the San Francisco Bay Area on one
of the Asian statations. It was in Japanese but included English subtitles.
The battle scenes of the Satsuma Rebellion were quite good.

A book was published (in Japanese) on the series. It contained a couple of
pages of color uniforms on the Satsuma Rebellion. I was lucky enough to get
someone at UC Berkeley to translate the pages for me.

I've never heard of Takaharazaka. I will look into it the next time I am in
Japantown in San Francisco. Perhaps I can find a version with English
subtitles.

Thanks for the information.
