Biwa

by ldsheridan

Anyone know where I can find traditional biwa music to download? I can find
tons of shamisen and other stringed instruments but no biwa..

Some time ago, I had the opportunity to listen to the well-known Romance of the Heike by a blind japanese woman playing biwa (a CD). Maybe the search would be successful under Heiki Monogatari
Franois

Thanks, Francois. I'm familiar with the title having seen it when I was
looking for biwa previously.. It's available on CD for way too much money,
but can't seem to find it for download. (Except for some rip-off sites
that say they have it until they get your money and then suddenly they
don't.) YouTube only has a few minutes of the performance..

I don't know about downloading, but I got some CDs by searching Amazon.com under "biwa" in the "music" section. I ripped some of the selections into my computer.

Try searching for Ugetsu-monogatari and see if the soundtrack isn't
out there...

One of my most favorite films.. although I haven't purchased the new
Criterion yet.. A quick scan hasn't shown anything but I'll take a more
careful look later.. I really wouldn't mind ordering the CDs available for
biwa but the prices are astronomical... All the ones I can afford I have,
but they only have one or two biwa cuts. I believe it is a conspiracy by
shamisen players.

I think the koto players are in on it, too...

If you have any personal contacts in Japan, there's quite a bit of
traditional music available on CDs in the 100 yen shops. (The CDs usually went
for 200 - 300 yen when I lived there, still very cheap.) I've had friends in
Japan send CDs. Even with mailing costs, this may still be the cheapest
way to go!

Maybe if you focused on the songs/stories traditionally paired with
biwa, instead of the instrument itself...

Re: [samuraihistory] Biwa

An excellent suggestion and one which I would pursue with vigor I must
state, however, that I would be hampered in this pursuit owing to a lack of
the required knowledge, being completely ignorant of the names of those
songs and stories associated with that instrument.

I did acquire a couple of years ago - I'm at work and cannot recall the
artist or the exact name of the album - but it was "Six Songs of Cherry
Blossoms" or something like that. The artist is well-known, I found much
about him on the web. But the tracks were titled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I could
find no liner notes on that particular album other than "traditional
songs". It is one of my favorite albums, although the songs are not at all
like the music one hears in Ugetsu or Kwaidon (Hoichi the Earless), being
not near as "dramatic" for lack of a better term. And of course I don't
speak Japanese so I have no idea what he is singing.
