Chat 6/6 + Emperor's New Food article

by secretarytocapt3

I would like to propose a tentative chat session for
Sunday June 6th

New York 6:00 pm
Los Angeles 3:00 pm
Chicago 5:00 pm
Sao Paulo/Buenos Aires 7:00 pm

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is doesn't overlap with the
satellite/cable broadcast of the NHK Taiga Shinsengumi
--------------------------------

EXCELLENT article about food diplomacy >> court feasts + banquets
for foreign dignitaries...downright humorous at times and deals with
1850s-1880s

M. William Steele "Alternative Narratives in Modern Japanese History"
isbn 0415305705
chapter "The emperor's new food" from page 110-132

***if anyone is going to use this chapter for a term paper or
something be sure to get full citation info from an online library
or something***

file name "SteeleEmperorsNewFood"
password makoto
file size: 2.77 MB(black+white bitmap but good quality)

page 123
"Samurai, farmer, artisan, or trader,
Oldster, youngster, boy or girl
Clever or stupid, poor or elite.
You won't get civilized if you don't eat meat!"

It's on from 8 to 8:45-8:50 on the East Coast. I think it's on saturdays in CA.

NOTICE ---Vice Chief Hijikata would like everyone to know that he is NOT the author of that atrocious poem despite his progressiveness concerning the Shinsengumi dinner menu.

Captain Okita would like to remind everyone that pork products are not to be considered meat. Ever.

Captain Nagakura insists that there is nothing whatsoever wrong with using misshapen vegetables in any stew containing meat.

Captain Saitou advises one and all that plain hot soba is in fact the best choice for meals. Always.

NOTICE --- His Illustrious Excellency the Lord Shogun Tokugawa
Yoshinobu wishes it known that the person who wrote this unspeakably
atrocious excuse for a poem will be captured by the Shinsengumi, very
slowly tortured, and then tied to a very large stone and drowned in
the inner moat of Edo Castle.

Captain Sagara would like to remind everyone that he and the Somo Roshitai are always looking for opportunities to set fires and create general mayhem. Being oppressed? Figure your literary efforts are at least as good as Shinsengumi Vice Commander Hijikata's? Trouble with bakufu pests? Contact Saigou Takamori to make arrangements. All forms of cash taken (literally). In an emergency, contact Suzuki Mikisaburou, our Shinsengumi representative, in Kyoto.

7:00 pm? I can try showing up... though this Sunday I
will be in one of the presentations scheduled for this
month, hopefully it will be over before 6:00 pm.
Perhaps I will end up showing a little later (like
8:00 pm?), but I will try my best to show up.

As I am a bit ahead of schedule in my translations and
in my preparatives, I hope I will have some time to
chat. I tried the chat applet and it worked fine, so I
shouldn't have any problem with connection or the
like.

*grin* Oh you poor naive thing, there is always some odd trouble with
all this online chat stuff, personally Miss B and I think it's the
ghosts of the Shinsengumi objecting to all the gossip and wondering what
they were "really" like. Either that or RK Sano was right and technology
is truly EVIL

Well, maybe Thomas Edison lied about his age and never told anyone about his trip to Japan...

You know what we haven't considered yet? It could all be an evil Ishin plot, headed by Saigo. I do believe the man could well be jealous of all the attention Hijikata and Co. are getting.

Anyway, I'll be there Sunday. See(?) you all then!

Sunday! Yes! I'll be there to "listen" in. I'll try not to make too
much noise so as not to distract. :O)

Oh you don't know about that java chat feature! It's evil... It will
do all sort of things like throw us out or make all letters
invisible... And just a heads up (and I'm serious about this), try
not to use two character smilies like this :)
When I did that it threw me out... All four times I did a smiley.
Must be all the Ishin spirits coming over and hating smilies
intended for Saitou, Hijikata and Sano...

See you then... Thanks for making time for us!

[everyone] is invited and from reading some of your profiles
submitted to Yamazaki Susumu at http://www.shinsengumimb.com it
would probably fun to just hangout and chat 15-20 minutes earlier on
off-topic stuff...e.g. paranormal, history or discuss our ongoing
projects.

The link to submit the profile to Yamazaki didn't work for me. Could
you tell me what it was again?
