The Meiji Restoration: Monarchism, Mass Communication and Conservative Revolution
by
Alistair Swale

Release date: December 2009

Available on Amazon and other online bookstores.

"The Meiji Restoration of 1868 is one of the most astonishing political events of the modern era, yet it doesn't fit easily with Western precedents of mass mobilization and social transformation. This book challenges some of the preconceptions that have hindered the Restoration being understood on its own terms."

Words like revolution, and democracy have always been associated with the Meiji Era but studies of the Meiji Constitution, mass militarization of the population, not to mention the blatant power monopoly of the victors tarnish the golden era image.

Swale completed a very decent work called The Political Thought of Mori Arinori: A Study in Meiji Conservatism and I hope this new text will further solidify his position in the new wave of Meiji studies.
