Trip to Kyoto

by kitsuno

FYI - I'm going to be in Kyoto for 2 weeks starting Sunday, and the
first 7 days will be in a hotel two blocks from Mibudera. Anyone have
any photograph requests? I'm free to travel for a few days, so if
anyone wants to request me to go somewhere and ask questions and/or
get some pics, let me know. Since I'll be in the heart of the ole
'gumi stomping grounds, I figured I'd ask.

No requests, just... whatever pictures you do take, will you post them
somewhere?

Of course. I'll have to keep track of what exactly I'm taking pics of
so I can label them correctly.

My daughter a/k/a child #2 said you need a photo of the spot where Itou was assassinated ---excuse me a moment while I smack her ^_^

She also requests a picture of "some random thing, not the usual touristy type things/places"

Dirt. Not a photo of dirt--an actual handful of...dirt from Kyoto... because....

"Kondo could have walked on that dirt..."

The strangeness...it does not come from me.

It's my 5th trip to Kyoto, but my first time staying in that
particular area. I've always stayed further East in Yamashina, and
since I've already seen the major stuff, now I'm just going to spend a
week walking around the city to find the off-the-beaten-path stuff.
I'll also be about a half mile or so from Nijo palace, so I'll head
over there as well. I also plan on hitting Osaka castle again, as
well as Mt. Hiei and the Enryakuji monastery. Sort of beyond the scope
of the Shinsengumi, but still in my area of interest.

I'll probably head to Nijo palace tomorrow. I walked over to the
Kamo river today and took a few pictures. I'll probably head to
Mibudera later today.

It rained today, so I didn't get a picture of a handful of dirt yet,
since it would be just a handful of mud :D

LOL. That's okay. The kid wanted an actual handful of dirt. Of course I imagine it's against some law to import foreign dirt across international lines or something.

Have a fun safe stay!

A cool Hijikata Manga

by ladynomad2000

There's this cool Shinsengumi manga called Getsu Mei
Sei Ki and it's on en.tro.py manga downloads. The
English translation is on hiatus right now but there's
a few parts done. Here it is.
http://entropy-manga.com/projects/gmsk/

I believe that enough people demand it, more will come
up.

Hello Marie!

Thanks for the link. I am going to the Tokyopop.com forum (editor's
link) and request they get GMSK.

Here are scans of character pics from the series donated by Hirotada a
really long time ago

I went to the Tokyopop.com forum and attempted to post a request but
(as usual) their login procedures weren't working (basically you are
asked 2 times to login then you get a database error--they've had this
problem for MONTHS) so I tried to send a general email asking if they
will license GMSK seeing how after VIZ seems to have discontinued Kaze
Hikaru, TP bought it (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I've
been too busy to keep up with manga world).

If I get some sort of reply from TP I'll let you guys know.

I did one better. I grabbed a pebble from Nijo castle, and one from
Mibu temple. I forgot to grab one at the Yagi residence. But, I did
get to touch the desk that Serizawa Kamo fell over dead on, and walk
through the room that Hirayama Goro and Serizawa Kamo were sleeping in
when they were attacked. Also got pictures of thier grave at mibudera,
as well as a pic of Kondo Isami's statue there.

Kondo's head

by ladynomad2000

I was reading about Kondo online and I read somewhere
that while his head was displayed after his execution,
it disappeared. Is this true?

Seems this trip is turning out to be a Bakumatsu trip after all.
Today I walked over to the Imperial palace, and then from there to
Sanjo bridge, and got some pics of it. Not sure where the whole Sanjo
Seisatsu incident took place, but I probably walked over it at some
point. Also added to the pebble collection with a pebble from the
grounds of the imperial palace, and one from the riverbank of the
kamo river under sanjo bridge. So your daughter won't get a handful
of dirt, but I can send some pebbles. I'll keep track of just where
I got them :D

I went to the Shishi graveyard, where the end result of a lot of
Shinsengumi handiwork ended up. Visited Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka
Shintaro's grave (and added a pebble to the collection), and Kido
Takayoshi's (Kouin) grave as well. Also visited the bakumatsu museum
nearby, but was sort of underwhelmed. It did have Kondo Isami's
chainmail and the sword that Saigo Takamori used to kill himself, but
beyond that, there wasn't a lot to see. Also, there was a painting of
Kondo Isami's severed head by a Choshu samurai who painted it while
it was sitting exposed by Sanjo bridge. Kondo didn't look too happy
about his fate.
