Questions relating to Yamanami and his death
by
jiaxin_nyo
I know he (Yamanami-san) was ordered to commit seppukku by Hijikata-
san for leaving the Shinsengumi; and the gist of why he left. But;
Who witnessed his death; and who was his suicide assistant(?)?
Did he really try to escape with his lover, or is this just a rumor?

Actually, the whole story as it is generally told could well be a
lie. We know that Yamanami died, but it is not clear -why- he died.
This information was orginally posted by Momoiro-usagi on the SHQ mb
if I recall correctly...
The only source which mentions "Akesato" is the work of a researcher
named Shimozawa Kan. No one can find any data relating to her outside
of his papers.
It's the same situation with the "Five Dreaded Articles". The rules
that were made after the Ikeda-ya Affair are real enough, but there
is a lot of debate over whether the first five existed. I think it
has been mentioned before that if they did exist, they were not as
harshly enforced as legend would have us believe.
It is also not clear whether or not there was actually any bad blood
between Hijikata and Yamanami. And several different versions of his
death have been given:
-He was caught after he deserted because he wanted to die.
-He wanted his death to be a warning to Kondo.
-He was not happy about the Shinsengumi being subordinates of the
Shogun and abandoning the "original" purpose of Sonno-joi.
-That he was actually seriously wounded in a fight with an enemy.
-That he killed himself because he was suffering from some sort of
neurosis.
I believe that was the gist of what we were told? Anyone have any new
info about this?

What makes it worse is that we know Yamanami is from Sendai but we don't
have any record of his family there, according to Tama. And also according
to Tama, Yamanami is an assumed name.

I do have a theory as to where that comes from, though. Given that his name
is Yamanami ("Mountain-south"), and that he's from Sendai, I would say that
it might mean that his family was from the mountains in the south of Sendai.
If there are any there.

I think that one is actually Hijikata. I've seen an individual shot of it
that was labeled "Toshi". My suspicion is that the one on the far left is Saitou.
Or else the other one in the background that has that sort of haircut...
New game! ID the Shinsengumi phonestrap. LOL

The second one from the left is Saitou, the one to the right of him is Okita,
and next to him is Hijikata. The one closest to you on the phone is Kondou,
and the other two are Nagakura and Serizawa, though I'm not sure which is
which.
