TREASURE TROVE of Edo and Meiji-era information

by shimazuryu

You guys!! I can't believe I found this!

http://cork.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/

Seems to be run by Waseda University-- a HUGE archive of newspapers and
prints relating to the late Edo/Bakumatsu and early Meiji periods!

In particular, this section of the archive:

http://cork.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/bunko10

Has info on Seinan War/Saigou Takamori, starting from b10_8328 to b10_8338.
My favorite is
http://cork.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/bunko10/b10_8336/b10_8336.jpg, a picture
of two of the samurai women of Satsuma, armed with naginata and short
swords.

Okay, so how am I supposed to search for Sagara when it's in Japanese??? :-D Never mind that, is there a translator that will give the me the kanji to paste into the search field? Once I can access anything they *might* have, then I can babelfish (and then BEG for a translation to restore some of my lost sanity).

phil (who feels like she's just been brought in to be tortured... give me a site of newspaper archives and NO way to search... that's cruel M... really cruel :-D)

Please see my post [1064]...I scanned almost all the paintings of
Satsuma Samurai women from a book I found at my university library.

Yeah, but this painting isn't in those-- it's a totally different one.
